About Betty

My name is Betty Fleming.  My husband is Michael.  We have four children; Kristen 12, Stephen 11, Elizabeth Diana (Nana) 9, and Mary 8.  Nana was diagnosed with WHS at birth.  Diagnosing doctors gave us the doom and gloom regarding her disorder.  They said she wouldn’t make it to two years and if she did, she’d never be anything more than a vegetable and would never see the age of 10 years.  She is almost 10 now and full of life.  She is amazing and has overcome more challenges in her life then I ever could imagine.  She is always happy and has touched our lives more than words could ever express.

Our lives are different than most.  I grew up with a special needs sister and Michael grew up with a special needs brother, neither had WHS.  We like to say it was God’s way of preparing us for the road we travel with our precious child.

Today Nana takes everything by g-tube.  In fact, she wants nothing in her mouth except her toothbrush.  Recently, she began in home physical therapy with our nursing agency.  We call her PT our “Miracle Worker”.  She believes Nana can do great things and is working on teaching her to walk.  This is a dream we put at the back of our minds.  Amazingly, Nana couldn’t even sit unsupported a few months ago.  So now we can’t wait to see what the future holds as the sky is her limits!
